Gadgets- Turning trash to treasure
How can I make room for shiny new gadgets? It seems like electronics makers are constantly bringing us newer, better, and – let’s be honest – cooler, products. So after rushing out and standing in line for the latest and greatest, you might be left scratching your head asking, “what’s the best way to dispose of this?” Here are some options that let you be green, and save some green too. Read on to find the one that works best for you.
Let’s make a deal.
If you’re interested in turning a small profit, and the item still functions, consider using websites such as eBay or Craigslist to turn your item into cash. Haven’t bought your replacement phone or computer yet? Check to see if your favorite electronics store will trade your old devices for a gift card to that store. Store associates will typically review your item and provide a reward based on its current value. Remember to erase any personal data and deactivate data service plans when selling or trading in electronics.
Contribute to a cause. Many charities run programs to help others in need, such as providing phones to disaster victims or women fleeing from domestic abuse. Programs such as Freecycle benefit those in your immediate community. Remember to include any cords, accessories, or manuals for the next owner.
Save the planet. If your device is too old or worn out to sell (anyone in the market for a 12-inch black-and-white tube TV)? Consider the earth-friendly solution and recycle. Visit epa.gov/ecycling to find recycling programs near you. Check the name of the manufacturer and company website to research programs they may have in place. If you’re still unsure of where to go, call your local city officials for information on collection services.
No more hiding old gadgets in closets, under beds, or on bookshelves. Sell, trade in, donate or recycle and turn that trash into treasure. Let the upgrades begin!
